PART 1. Top dogs of NYC
Every year the American Kennel Club releases their list of “most popular breeds.” For 27 years straight, the number one most popular dog across the nation has been the Labrador Retriever. I believe it. Retrievers tend to be sparky, lovable and loyal, as well as easy to train. So while on the national level, Labrador Retrievers rank #1, the crown of top dog in the Big Apple is worn by another breed…
Can you guess what it is?
Working our way up the list, let’s start from the bottom, number 5, and work our way up to the top spot. Here we go.

Coming in at number 5 is the Golden Retriever, edging out the competition from beagles, poodles, and chihuahuas. Next, the fourth most popular breed in New York City according to the American Kennel Club is: the German Shepherd Dog. (Well, maybe it’s all the police dogs and guard dogs we have here. German Shepherds are great to go for a run or walk with. Later I’ll be sharing some photos from my recent dog walk with a friend in Long Island City who owns a German Shepherd mix.) OK, number three is the standard Bulldog. Not much to say about that. Number two, the runner-up is… the nation’s number one pet dog: Labrador Retrievers.

And the top dog in NYC is… the French Bulldog! Yes these compact, flat faced pups with big eyes and ears, are an adorable breed that look like they jumped out of a Disney movie are also a favorite of celebrities and Instagram. It’s worth mentioning that this breed ranked top in other coastal cities too — LA, SF, and West Palm Beach seem to share our city’s fascination for Frenchies.  (Source: http://www.akc.org/most-popularbreeds/2017-full-list/ )

On a side note, I asked my friend Jeff, who has been walking dogs parttime dog for about 20 years. From his experience, he told me that the number one breed in New York City now is definitely the Shih Tzu (SHEET zoo), and after the Shih Tzu, comes the French Bulldog. Another thing to consider is these annual published rankings by the American Kennel Club only apply to pure breeds. Many, many more people have what we call a “ mix,” or mixed breed dog.

PART 2. Where do we let the dogs out in NYC?

I asked around and talked to some friends who are dog-owners and paid dog walkers, and here’s what I found out. There are three places they all suggested that are great for dogs: Long Island City in Queens, Central Park in Manhattan, and Prospect Park in Brooklyn. Prospect Park is

Long_Island_City-LIC

especially worth mentioning because not only do they have several dog runs, but they also have a dog beach! According to the Prospect Park Alliance’s website, here’s what they have to say: “Prospect Park is a haven for dogs, offering acres of green space for special off-leash hours at the Long Meadow, Nethermead, Peninsula Meadow and, during those hours, even a place to swim, Dog Beach.”

Let me back up and explain the dog run. This is an enclosed area where dogs can run around “off leash.” If you’re coming to Brooklyn, I suggest you check out the local organization called Fellowship in the Interest of Dogs and their Owners, FIDO for short — You can check out their website at: www.fidobrooklyn.org  They chose FIDO as an acronym because “fido” is used in English as a generic name for a pet dog. It’s also the name of an Italian dog in the 1940s captured people’s attention because of his unwavering loyalty to his dead master, just like the Japanese dog Hachiko who has a monument dedicated to her in front of Shibuya station in Tokyo.

Fellowship in the Interest of Dogs and their Owners、略してFIDOと呼ばれる地元の団体をチェックすることをお勧めします。

Let me back up a little bit.

PART 3.“Why are there so many different words for ‘dog’  in the English language?

In English we have a lot of synonyms for “dog”: doggy, canine, hound, rover, fido, “man’s best friend”. And other words that convey less respect would include: pooch, flea-bag, mongrel, mutt, cur; we say “K-9” for “police dog” or “dog unit”; and for young dogs: pup and puppy. We don’t use these synonyms all the time, but they appear in our speech and writing.

The answer to why we have so many words for “dog” probably has to do with the enormous cultural and social significance of dogs: “Our dogs are more than pets—they’re members of our families. The names we pick for them reflect our personalities, interests, and obsessions,” reads The Daily Treat.

Another thing when it comes to dogs that might interest, or even surprise listeners in Japan, is the names we give our dogs. Let me give you a quick roundup of New York’s most popular dog names for this year. These stats come from rover.com Here’s the full list of New York City’s top 10 male and female dog names.

PART 4. Dog communication

Cats say meow but dogs say: Bow-wow, woof, arf, ruff, yip, yap and when in pain: yelp! It’s true — the name of a popular bar and restaurant review site and app actually means to cry out in pain like a dog. And dog lovers around the world can just point to the sheer number of words for “bark” in our lexicon to prove their pet’s superiority. LOLIf you want to explore this topic of dog communication some more, you can check out a very interesting book called “Barking: The Sound of a Language” by Norwegian dog trainer Turid Rugaas. She runs a dog training school on her farm in Norway — too bad it’s not in New York City — but she is known for natural dog training methods and understanding dog communication. No matter what we call it, dog barks have a lot of meaning either to their owners or strangers, and it’s helpful to consider this list of 6 different kinds of dog barks: I’ll just read the list and include the chart for people to check out if they are interested (Source Wikipedia)

1. Excitement bark

It’s a high-frequency hysterical-sounding bark. It can be accompanied by whining. One observes it when a hyper dog is highly aroused, like when people come home or the dog is going out in a car or there is another dog in sight.

2.  Warning bark

It’s a single “woof” sound meant to convey a warning. It’s not going to be loud and prolonged. But it has an important message. Often people don’t even notice this bark. So a dog feels like his/her message was ignored and then takes charge of the situation. This can result in aggression or a full-fledged barking problem. Acknowledge warning barks.

3.  Fear barking

This is a long series of high-pitched barks, similar to excitement barking. But you can sense the dog’s fear. The bark could end in a howl. A classmate of mine once explained this: “When a dog has fear in his voice, you just know it!” What a dog is afraid of is hard to predict and sometimes hard to understand. But it’s important to accept it and respect it. A dog will take time to overcome his/her fears. It’s important to note what s/he is expressing fear towards and give him a chance to get away from it.

4. Guard bark

This type of barking occurs when a dog feels the need to defend himself/herself against a perceived threat. The barking is often accompanied by plenty of growling. Due to the growling, it is often mistaken for aggression or dominance. But the need to defend oneself comes from a fear. It is a pity when such dogs are then reprimanded or dominated. It pushes them further into a corner and can force them to go into a shell or snap back. A dog that feels a need to guard has to be removed from that position immediately. Further training can help the dog learn to be less fearful in such situations.

5.  Frustration bark

This is a monotonous bark that keeps repeating and sometimes ends in a howl. It is born out of boredom or utter frustration. Such dogs are crying out for help. They need mental stimulation or need some serious reconsideration of their lifestyle. A behaviorist should be able to help in such a situation

6.  Learned bark

Such barking can be recognised by looking at the dog. The dog will bark and then keep looking back at people to see what reaction he/she is getting out of the people. He has learned that barking gets him a certain reaction. Giving him any reaction, including yelling at him, gives him exactly what he is planning on getting. Work with a behaviorist to correct this behavior. But do not reprimand him. That will make matters worse.

PART 5. : People, “Please curb your dog.”

If you’re in New York City, at some point you will come across some

SIGN_Curb-your-dog_04

version of a sign that reads: “Please curb your dog.” Most people studying English will come across this word “curb,” as a noun meaning “the raised edge of a sidewalk” or “something that checks or restrains” Like in this sentence: “High interest rates put a curb on spending.” As a verb, you might hear this word, like in “curb your enthusiasm”. It means “to check, restrain, or control (an impulse or activity).”

I don’t know if people in other parts of America use this word or phrase at all.  And here in the city, people definitely do not follow its instructions. To “curb” means: To lead (a dog) off the sidewalk into the gutter so that it can excrete waste.

After all is said and done, I’ve only once in my life actually seen an owner bring their dog into the street to make number 1 or 2 in the

gutter. Instead, almost everyone lets their dog poop where the dog feels comfortable, and usually it is right in the middle of the sidewalk, or pee on the side of buildings. Then maybe half of the owners come prepared with a disposable bag to clean up the mess.

after all is said and done — 結局のところ、とどのつまりは ← もう言うべきこと、されるべきことはすべて言い尽くしてしまっているのだけれど要は

make number 1 or 2  排尿、排便をする poop =make number 2        pee =urinate=make number 1

Depending on the area, you’ll see piles of dog do along the sidewalk on your walk to work or to mass transit. Buildings that have doormen and maintenance staff, actively hose down the sidewalks multiple times a day. But more quiet streets, maybe with brownstones or more industrial areas, you really have to navigate something like a minefield. For that reason alone, you will find a lot of people in New York City who take off their shoes when they get home, just like in Japan.

ENDING

Well I think we could do an entire podcast series purely on this topic of life with dogs in New York City (Depending on our listener response, we can make this a regular installment.)

Time for some shout-outs. Just want to acknowledge Brooklyn’s Prospect Alliance, The Daily Treat, and the American Kennel Club for their information and stats which I cited from.
