So, um, you brought up the topic of narrative marketing, and, uh, I’m not sure where to take this topic because there is a lot to say. Um, it’s not a term that I think ordinary people are going to use. If you’re in—if you’re in the field of marketing this is something you’ll probably talk about.

But so much about narrative marketing is, uh—not to overuse the term but—“organic.” Uh, or maybe kinda “natural,” so people are participating in narrative marketing without knowing that (maybe) that quote-unquote that’s what they’re doing. Um. If you’re looking for a definition of narrative marketing, here’s one:

Here’s a definition of “narrative marketing”
Narrative Marketing is the multi-disciplinary management* of how the brand story unfolds to, and connects emotionally with, the audience to inspire desired actions. It is achieved through the co-creation of stories with customers, staff and the public within a designed story world.

So that definition of narrative marketing, it contains a lot of concepts.
And I think the easiest way to think about it is: um, content marketing versus narrative marketing.

So, a lot of people [ sic might] say now, “It’s no longer “what to say” and “how to say it” that matters in our highly connected and social world these days. But what also… Or maybe what matters most is What is, “What are the different audiences hearing?” What are your diff— What are your— like, if you have one…

Let me back up and say:

So content marketing maybe thinks [sic assumes] you have one audience and treats them as a block. And then narrative marketing helps us understand that there are multiple audiences. And each individual listener, or a person that represents an audience, they’ll hear something in their own way and they’ll say something on their own.

And that, um, this all has to do with the democratization of information. ‘Coz (because) everyone—not ‘everyone’—but most people are connected by a mobile phone with cameras and social media apps. And so people are capable of creating content, um, about a brand. Yeah. So one major thing to think of is: it’s no longer possible for brands to control what is being said about the company. And in other words, brands can only work to manage their brand narrative.

Episode 25

Gay Pride events are scheduled all through June, culminating with the annual New York City Pride March. This year’s march will happen on Sunday, June 30th. It starts at noon. I put in some links to events to give you an idea of how much is going on. As corporations have jumped on the bandwagon, pride has become like Christmas — a holiday every celebrates but isn’t sure why they are celebrating. And now all of a sudden every politician and company wants to rally behind it.
jump on the bandwagon
