INTRO Episode No. 5: Bike New York – Part 2: It’s getting better all the time

Welcome to the “New York Breeze:” A quick 5-minute podcast where you can enjoy hearing about life in New York and listen to one-minute notes and tips from a local.

PART 1. Why biking saved my life. In a previous episode we talked about bike riding, or cycling, and how it has been soaring in popularity around the world for various reasons. A bicycle offers a cheap, fast and healthy way to commute. I consider the singer David Byrne to be one of New York City’s most influential longtime proponents of biking.

I consider  O  to be ~ 私は O が~であると考える

“I cycled when I was at high school, then reconnected with bikes in New York in the late 70s. It was a good way of getting around the clubs and galleries of the Lower East Side and Soho. At that time almost no one else was riding, but I didn’t care what people thought.”

This quote from an interview in The Guardian with David Byrne highlights how bikers tend to be independent. A bicycle symbolizes freedom because the rider can pretty much go anywhere for free, without gas or a motor. And you don’t have to follow a schedule. And at the same time, it’s a big reason why some motorists scorn cyclists.

I love biking, because it’s invigorating and fun. I have to say that biking has helped me get through some of the most emotional and stressful periods in my life and has helped make me a more patient and appreciative person.

get through 〈困難な時〉を切り抜ける;

“It’s getting bettr all the time.”

PART 2. It’s getting better all the time. When we commute by bike, it wakes us up. By the time you get there, having dealt with a little bit of New York traffic along the way, you’ll be ready to face a tough day at work. On the other hand, I’m definitely not in love with all the potholes and other road hazards, nor the gnarly traffic. But the good news is: things are getting better.

gnarly traffic = heavy( bad ) traffic

One key reason is the financial services community loves biking and former mayor Bloomberg gave the green light to CitiBank to sponsor a bike-share program called CitiBike. Now our current mayor DiBlasio deployed a program called Vision Zero that aims for zero traffic fatalities. The result has been more bike lanes, less fatalities, and an increase in bike ridership.

give the green light ——-to give permission for someone to do something or for something to happen

PART 3. The stats. In 2017 the city undertook a comprehensive analysis of cyclist safety and ridership. Here are the results.

comprehensive  1.

* 24% of adult New Yorkers, nearly 1.6 million people, ride a bike.

* Of those adult New Yorkers, more than eight hundred thousand ride a bicycle regularly (at least several times a month).

* About 86,000 adult New Yorkers, 2.5% of all commuting residents, usually bike to work or school.

* Back in 1980, only 9,700 people commuted to work by bike. Ten years later, the number was slightly down to 9,600.

* However in over the course of the 1990s the number increased to 15,000 by 2000.

* In 2010, we saw 25,000 commuters, and by 2016, 45,800 people were commuting to work by bike on a daily basis.

* 156% growth in daily cycling between 2006 and 2016.

* Between 2011 and 2016, Cycling to work in NYC has grown nearly 2x faster as other major cities (2011 and 2016).

* Cyclists responsible for just 0.4% of pedestrian fatalities.

So that’s great news overall. New York City bicycle ridership is way up, and fatalities are flat.

Part 4. Vision Zero “Your choices behind the wheel matter.” matter  v.

Our current Mayor is Bill DiBlasio. He’s from Brooklyn and one of his most famous initiatives so far has been “Vision Zero.” There’s a popular phrase I notice that’s used a lot when talking about bikes in the city.  The Mayor has made

vision-zero-bumper-sticker-on-car

safer streets a priority for his administration, and Vision Zero is supposed to induce “traffic calming.” This is where bikes are intentionally sharing the road, in an attempt to encourage motorists to slow down, keep to the speed limit and follow traffic rules.  It works !

Will we ever be Number 1 in the worldwide list of  “The 20 Most Bike Friendly Cities on the Planet ? Nope. That’s for Scandinavia. Biking occupies a unique space in the way people think about New York City at this time in history.  For the past 20 years New York City has gotten safer. The city has become nationally and internationally recognized for our efforts to create safe street designs, but we still have a long way to go if we want to ride like people in Copenhagen.

PART 5. Know before you go: Important things to know:

1. Stay safe, wear a helmet.

2. Make sure that your bike is correctly fitted. By that I mean, you have to have the proper size bicycle with the saddle height set comfortably.

3. Test your brakes and gears before going into traffic.

4. No riding on the sidewalk. Only kids 12 and under are allowed to ride on the sidewalk in New York City. 5. You are allowed to ride on either side of the street going in the same direction as traffic. In other words, follow the flow of traffic. When riding on avenues like Amsterdam Avenue on the Upper West Side, the bike lane is to the far left. And just know that the bus lane on cross-town streets and avenues is always on the far right. It’s better to keep away from buses. Don’t make the bus driver’s life any harder.

6. Adjust to changing conditions and try to exercise your best judgment.

ENDING All right folks, thank you for taking time out of your day to listen to our podcast. I hope that the next time you’re in New York City, or any new place for that matter, maybe you rent a bike or bring your own Brompton or another kind of folding bike. Renting a bike is a great way to beat jet lag and get a feel for an area.

get a feel for ~を感じ取る、~の感触をつかむ

Until next time, stay engaged, keep informed, and know what’s up.  Bye for now.
