Welcome to episode number 17: “Amazon’s HQ2 Valentine’s Day Breakup.” Last time we covered the Amazon HQ2 announcement it was just Christmas Eve 2018. People are still reeling from the announcement. Here’s what people here are saying.

In a stunning reversal, on Valentine’s Day, of all days, Amazon called off their proposal to build HQ2 in Long Island City, Queens.
An Amazon spokesperson explained: “…Looking at the opposition and the timeline we decided we don’t want to work in this environment in the long term.”

４. NYC NEEDS INNOVATION
A friend who works in tech had this to say: “I’m a computer programmer who lives and works in New York. The prospect of Amazon coming to Long Island City was really exciting. It would have created a lot of new jobs in technology, and also attracted other tech companies into the area. This would have diversified New York’s economy, and moved us toward future growth and innovation.”

５. NIMBY — Not In My Backyard! ( 私の裏庭ではやらないで）
There’s a big NIMBY aspect of this.There was a huge leaflet campaign and canvassing door-to-door. A friend who works at a Manhattan law firm had this to say:

この件については、NIMBY つまり「必要だと思うけれど、自分の地域には来ないでほしい。」という面が非常に大きいです。多くのチラシが配られ、反対活動の個別訪問もありました。マンハッタンの法律事務所で働く友人はこのように言います。
Shoko : クリスさん、NIMBYとは何の略語なのですか。
Chris：NIMBy stands for “Not in my backyard.” It’s a phrase for when residents of a community oppose a development project close to home. Nimbyism is when you’re against the change because it’s going to come to your own neighborhood. Whereas you wouldn’t have any problem with the development being built elsewhere. ( NIMBYはNot In My Backyard! ( 私の裏庭ではやらないで！）を表します。地域の住民が家の近くの開発計画に反対するときのフレーズです。Nimbyism は自分の周りで起こるときに変化に反対することを言います。どこか他の場所で起こっているのなら、全く問題としないのですが。
“I’ve lived in Long Island City for four years. And I’m relieved to hear that Amazon isn’t moving there. It’s a nice family friendly area. The addition of 25 thousand new workers and a helipad would have turned the neighborhood into “Long Amazon City.” I think we should have a different conversation right now. Why does one of the biggest name brands in the world need a $3 billion subsidy to choose New York City? And why were we offering it? Cancelling the deal feels like the right choice to me.”

６. TRADE UNIONS FOR, RETAIL ASSOCIATES UNION AGAINST
Amazon is famous for its anti-union reputation. And New York has pro-union roots. But consider this: some powerful union leaders saw this as a lost opportunity for Amazon’s warehouse and distribution workers to form unions. A friend who works with the unions declined to comment, for obvious reasons.

7. LONG ISLAND CITY GENTRIFIED A LONG TIME AGO.
A friend who is a Queens native from Astoria told me: “Look, the area was already being built up years ago. The gentrification that was going to happen, already occurred. And Queens needs something. For me, because I have my own online business on Etsy and Amazon, it’s attractive. At the same time, I also can’t forgive them for destroying the independent bookstore business and libraries, which used to be community hubs.”

The New York Post headlined: “They are Ama-gone! It’s a great headline, but it’s not accurate. Similar to Google and Facebook, Amazon already occupies some significant real estate in Manhattan. So it’s not like they don’t know our politics, our workforce, our unions, and the market size.

８．IT’S COMPLICATED.
Personally, I’ve always been skeptical of Amazon. I think they have a lot of “kaizen” to do when it comes to their carbon footprint for example. All in all, I think this is a big loss for New York.

I’m sure the Governor and Mayor can remember New York’s recent history as a place for innovation. They have memories of better days, when companies like IBM, Corning Glass, and Eastman Kodak employed tens of thousands of people upstate. And on *Long Island Northrop Grumman, and others, supported an aerospace and aviation industry of more than 30,000 workers. Despite our deep talent pool and venture capital, NYC lacks a flagship tech company. New York’s economy is still dependent on financial services.

Confusingly, Brooklyn and Queens are physically located on Long Island. But when we say just “Long Island” we mean Nassau and Suffolk counties which are suburban, rural and waterfront homes.
＊ <3 Sometimes we use this combination to make a heart: <3 It’s sideways .Then I put a strike through in it to mean ”Amazon doesn’t ‘heart’ NY”. It alludes to the famous I Love NY logo.
