New York City’s garbage is maybe the last thing you want to hear about. But stick with me, friends, because today’s theme is super interesting: “Found New York” We are going to talk about Thrift Stores, navigating Craigslist, and Stuff You Find All Around New York City.

ニューヨークのゴミについては全く聞きたくないですよね。でも今日のテーマはとってもおもしろいですよ。「ニューヨークでときめき見つけた！」リサイクル・ショップ、クレイグスリスト、そしてニューヨーク中で見つけられる物　についてお話します。

New York can be a walker’s paradise — With all the great neighborhoods to experience, architecture to take in, and people to watch. One thing you might not realize is how much free stuff you can find in New York City if you just look around.

Sure, NYC is dirty, but if you’re not afraid of a little grime, and don’t mind taking a minute to clean, then the city is chock full of treasures waiting for the taking.

ニューヨークは歩行者の楽園です。すばらしい周辺（近隣）、見るべき建築物があります。お気づきではないと思いますが、見回すと多くの無料のものがあるのです。確かに、ニューヨークは汚いですが、少しの汚れ、そしてきれいにするちょっとした手間をいとわないなら、持ち帰ってもらうことを待っている宝であふれています。

Our home is lovingly adorned with street treasures thanks to the transient nature of life in the city and especially lately, a lot of people are into the“Kon-Mari method” of decluttering and tidying up their homes…

Actually, since the whole Marie Kondo trend has taken off, thrift stores find it hard to keep up with all the donations.

私達の家はニューヨーカーのきまぐれというか新し物好きの性質のおかげで路上の宝で愛らしく飾られています。そして、特に最近では、多くの人がコンマリ・メソッドに夢中で家をきれいに片づけています。実際、「コンマリ・メソッド」がはやっているので、リサイクル・ショップは持ち込まれるものの対応に追いつかないくらいです。

THE STUFF YOU SEE OUT ON THE STREET 路上で目にするもの

Like this kids trike. That’s obviously left there because the parent was like, “Look, you’re not riding this anymore. I’m putting it on the street.”

この三輪車を見てみましょう。明らかにそこに置かれたのです。　なぜなら親が子どもに「もうこれ乗らないでしょう。路上に置くわよ。」といった具合です。

I keep telling myself, I’m going to document all the stuff I’ve found. Real quick in the past two years alone, I’ve found a box of 100 classic 45 records; 8 fully functional vaccuums — Dyson, Shark, Dirt Devil — solid wood desks, architect lamps, an espresso maker, a Whirly-Pop popcorn maker, a new Cuisinart toaster oven, various glass vases and tea sets, and much more.

見付けたものを記録するよう心がけています。ここ２年間だけでも、全く壊れていない掃除機８台――ダイソン、シャーク、ダート・デビル、無垢材の机、アーキテクト・ライト、エスプレッソ・メーカー、ポップコーン・メイカー、新品のクイジナート・オーブントースター、いろいろなガラスの花瓶とティー・セット、など他にもたくさんのものを見つけました。

DON’T BE AFRAID TO PICK IT UP　ためらわずに拾いましょう。

Maybe I’m weird. But I’m not alone. I know plenty of people who grew up in New York City, who are by no means poor, and will pick something up from the sidewalk if they see value in it.

Honestly, it’s a truly sad sight to see heaps of perfectly good housewares and furniture that get thrown into the garbage truck every day. When I find something new and useful, it sparks joy for me. (WINK WINK to the Marie Kondo approach.)

変な人　と思うかもしれませんが、私だけではないのです。全く貧しくないのに舗道にあるものが価値があると思えば拾う多くのニューヨーク育ちの知人がいます。

正直、良い家庭用品や家具が毎日トラックで運ばれるのは本当に悲しい光景です。新しく、役立つものを見つけると、心がときめきます。

FIRST-HAND EXPERIENCES AT SECOND-HAND STORES / THRIFT STORES IN NYC　リサイクルショップで実体験

In Japan, you call these “recycle shops,” but we call them “thrift stores” or “second-hand shops.” Or because as Americans we tend to use brand names for a lot of things we’ll just say Goodwill of Salvation Army. When you go into a Goodwill or Sally Shop, be prepared for the smell of mothballs. I’m not dissing it; it’s just a reality that all the items need to be cleaned and fumigated before reselling to the public.

日本で、リサイクル・ショップと呼ばれるものはスリフト・ストアーとかセカンド・ハンドショップといいます。　　または、アメリカでは商標名を使うことが多いので、Goodwill とか Salvation Armyもよく使います。リサイクルショップに入るときは、防虫剤のにおいがするのを覚悟しておいてください。侮辱していっているのではありません。再び人の手に渡るために消毒するというのが現実なのです。

My favorite thrift store, by far, is Housing Works — this mission and the quality of the shopping experience is a lot like what Japanese shoppers expect from their vintage stores. Housing Works takes donated items to fund their mission to end the dual crises of homelessness and AIDS. For all of these stores, your purchases are helping to create jobs and fuel a better business model. If you’re donating clothes or items to these store, you get a piece of paper to claim a deduction on your tax return at the end of the year.

私のお気に入りのリサイクル・ショップは断然、ハウジング・ワークスです。ここで買い物するのは日本のみなさんがヴィンテージ・ストアで買い物するのに似ていると思います。ホームレスとエイズという２つの危機を終わらせるという使命の基金を集めるためにいらなくなった物の寄付を受け付けています。そして、これらの店で買い物をすることは雇用促進に役立つのです。衣類などを寄付した場合は、年末の税控除に使うことができます。

CURB ALERT – Craigslist (CL) ads for free stuff in NYC

When I told a friend in Brooklyn how I find all this cool stuff, she was like, “You could just use Craigslist.” I don’t know. It’s just not the same. In the spirit of found art, I love that moment when you’re out doing something and then happen upon a really cool piece, or see something that you need but weren’t in a rush to buy. But on the topic of Craigslist, they have what’s called a Curb Alert. And you can search for cheap and free stuff. Here’s the link for NYC https://newyork.craigslist.org/search/zip And for people getting rid of the stuff, they don’t want to see it go into a landfill. So it’s a win-win.

クレイグスリストは三行広告が集まった掲示板サイトのようなもので、北米を中心に各都市ごとのクレイグスリストのページが存在します。その中で　Curb Alertと呼ばれているものは　「不用品を出しますよ」　といった告知なのですね。curbとは「ニューヨークの犬」のエピソードにも出てきましたが、名詞では「車道と歩道の境にある縁石」のことなので、「家の前に出しますよ」ということなのでしょう。街を歩いていて偶然に出会うというときめきはないかもしれませんが、手放す人にとっても手に入れる人にとっても便利なものですね。

LET’S TALK TRASH FOR A MINUTE. ごみ問題に苦言を呈する

To be honest, New York City’s recycling program has bombed. Originally the plan was to reclaim all the redeemable and salable glass and metal to fund the city’s recycling program. Instead, it’s running into a deficit with no end in sight. Every night you see various people collecting all the bottles and cans from the curbside. Then loading them into unmarked rented trucks to be sold in bulk. The city is left with the leftovers that get sent to landfills.

正直言って、ニューヨークのリサイクリング計画は失敗に終わっています。元々の計画では、市のリサイクリングプログラムに資金を供給するためにガラスや金属を回収することになっていました。でも今は赤字が増える一方です。毎晩様々な人達がビンや缶を売りさばくために根こそぎ持っていくので、残されるのは廃棄物処理場へ行くしかないものだけなのです。

The NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY) collects recyclables and delivers them to private processors under contract with the city. The Department of Sanitation collects approximately 1,200 tons of recycling a day.

ニューヨーク衛生局は再生利用可能なものを回収し、市と契約している処理業者に持っていきます。一日おそよ1200トンものリサイクリングを回収します。

Overall, we as Americans are not set up for success when it comes to recycling. Even before China stopped accepting plastic garbage from us, 91 percent of recyclable plastic in the U.S. has been ending up in landfills and the world’s oceans.　　end up in で終わる　　　　landfill 最終処分場

概して、リサイクリングについては私たちはうまくいっているとは言えません。中国がプラスチックごみを受け入れるのを止める前でさえ、アメリカでは再生利用可能なプラスチックの91パーセントがごみ処理場そして世界の海へ行くのが実態です。
